43rd Rally: "Along the Big River PO"

Introduction to Rally 2027:

The 43rd Carovana Romantica Rally 2027 theme is: ”Along the Big River PO", an itinerary following the course of the Po River - the great artery that shaped the history, wealth, and identity of the Italian peninsula.

 

The Adventure will start in the heart of Piedmont, driving through the Langhe and Moferrat rolling hills, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, visiting its castles, historic villages, and world-famous vineyards. We will discover some hidden gems, evidence of ancient Roman and Lombard cities, up to medieval, renaissance, and baroque architecture, such as Grinzane Cavour Castle, Manta Castle, the historic center of Barolo, and Staffarda Abbey.

From the vineyard-covered hills of Piedmont, the itinerary continues through the little-known but wonderful hills of the Oltrepò Pavese and Piacenza areas through spectacular mountain passes in Ligurian Appennines, such as the Passo del Penice (1,149 m a.s.l), that will take us to Bobbio, a small medieval jewel, to reach Piacenza and Cremona.

After visiting Cremona, the city of violins, we'll head to Lake Garda to stay in Sirmione, famous for its historic center overlooking the lake, the Scaligero Castle, and the Grottoes of Catullus, the remains of a Roman villa.

Based in Sirmione del garda, in a Thermal baths Resort, drive along the lake with a circular route of about 190 km, which will touch Riva del Garda, , the famouse Strada della Forra, a spectacular path carved into the rock that passes through deep gorges , up to Vittoriale degli Italiani, the house-museum of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio.

We will leave the Lake Garda visiting Mantua (and te Tazio Nuvolari Museum) and crossing the Valpolicella, one of Italy’s most renowned wine regions, celebrated for its exceptional Amarone wine, where scenic roads wind through elegant estates, to reach the Euganean Hills a unique group of volcanic hills renowned for their striking landscapes, historic villages, and rich cultural heritage. From here, it will be possible to easily extend the trip for some extra days in Venice

Langhe Hills

Crew arrival and hotel check-in at the Monferrat Hotel. Drivers' Briefing, Event Presentation, and Welcome Kit Consignment. Dinner.

Friday, September 17th - 90km
Langhe Tour - Grinzane Cavour - Barolo

A 90 km tour through the Langhe hills (UNESCO World Heritage) and landscapes famous for vineyards and fine wines. We will visit the historic center of Barolo, the village that gave its name to the renowned wine, and Grinzane Cavour Castle, a medieval castle housing a museum dedicated to the history of the Langhe and its wine culture. The tour includes a visit to a prestigious winery with a wine tasting. Dinner and a show at the hotel.

Saturday, September 18th - 240 km
Acqui Terme - Tortona - Varzi - Bobbio - Cremona - Sirmione

Following the river PO through the hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, we will cross Appenines Pass reaching Bobbio, an historic village famous for Abbey of San Colombano. From there, we continue to Piacenza, with its Renaissance squares and palaces, and finally to Cremona, the city of violin making, home to the Torrazzo and the tradition of master luthiers.

Sunday, September 19th - 176 km
Sirmione - Mantova - Sabbioneta- Sirmione

We will visit Manua and Sabbioneta (UNESCO Heritage) home to the museum dedicated to Tazio Nuvolari, the legendary Italian racing driver. After a wine tasting in the Morenic Hills, known for their scenic landscapes and local vineyards, we will reach Sirmione, on Lake Garda, in about one hour.

Monday, September 20th 190 km
Grand tour of Lake Garda

We will visit the lake with a circular route of about 190 km, touching Riva del Garda, an elegant lakeside town surrounded by mountains, known for its historic Rocca and waterfront promenade. The route continues along the Strada della Forra, a spectacular road carved into the rock, crossing deep gorges and offering some of the most iconic views of the lake, up to the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the house-museum of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, with its gardens, monuments, and unique collections.

Tuesday, September 21st - 150km
Sirmione- Euganean Hills- Montegrotto

We will leave the lake crossing Valpolicella, one of Italy’s most renowned wine regions celebrated for Amarone wine, its historic villas. Scenic roads will lead us through the countryside to the Euganean Hills, a unique volcanic landscape known for charming villages, thermal springs, and historic sites such as Arquà Petrarca, the medieval village where the poet Petrarch spent his final years. From here, it will be possible to easily extend the trip for a few extra days in Venice.

Wednesday, September 22nd 123 km
Montegrotto - Padua - Montegrotto

We will discover the Euganean Hills and Padua, starting from Galzignano Terme and crossing the scenic Euganean Hills Regional Park. We will visit Arquà Petrarca, a medieval village linked to Francesco Petrarca, Praglia Abbey, a historic Benedictine monastery, and Padua’s highlights: the Basilica of Saint Anthony, the Scrovegni Chapel with Giotto’s frescoes, and Prato della Valle.
